Course Description: This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge necessary to troubleshoot, maintain and repair pneumatic control systems and pneumatic equipment.
Course Objectives:
  • Identify pneumatic components and their function within a pneumatic control system
  • Read and understand pneumatic system schematic diagrams
  • Design common pneumatic control circuits
  • Learn troubleshooting techniques applicable to a pneumatic control circuit
  • Learn proper maintenance techniques for pneumatic components within the system
  • Demonstrate an understanding of safe work habits around a pneumatic control circuit
  • Outline:
  • Safety - proper work habits, potential hazards and their avoidance, safe system design, general safety precautions
  • Theory - force and work, compressibility, pressure and force, pressure measurement, basic system design
  • Energy Transmission - gas characteristics, Ideal Gas Law, air compression and expansion, air compressors (hardware), flow and velocity, inefficiencies in pneumatic control systems
  • System Components and Symbology - valves (2-way, 3-way, 4-way, 5-way, solenoids, air pilot), switches, regulators (relieving and non-relieving), cylinders, symbols, component applications, air tools, air motors, flow controls
  • Air Distribution - dryers, receivers, piping, filters, lubrication
